My Safe Florida Home:
Since Hurricane Charley, the first of eight hurricanes to strike Florida in 2004 and 2005, the Volunteer Florida Foundation, through the Florida Disaster Recovery Fund, has provided funding to local nonprofit organizations to conduct disaster recovery and community rebuilding. Because of our successful track record in partnering with local nonprofits in recovery, Volunteer Florida Foundation has been chosen by the State of Florida to manage a component of the My Safe Florida Home program, called the Nonprofit Program. The program was designed to allow us to partner with local nonprofits in mitigating homes for low-income Floridians.
Funding for the My Safe Florida Home Nonprofit program has been authorized in Florida Statute 215.5586, as amended, and designates the Department of Financial Services as overall administrator.
Homeowners must sign up with the nonprofit partner that serves their community and must meet the following eligibility requirements to receive assistance:
- The value of the home must be $300,000 or less
- The home must have been built before 2002 at its permanent location (site-built)
- The household income must be 80 percent or less of the Area Median Income (AMI)
Once qualified as eligible by our nonprofit partners, participating Floridians receive a free home-inspection survey that identifies areas of the home that should be fortified against disaster. After receiving the inspection survey, the nonprofit partner confers with the homeowner on a plan of action. The following home improvements are permitted by the law:
- Improving the strength of roof deck attachment.
- Creating a secondary water barrier to prevent water intrusion.
- Improving the survivability of roof covering.
- Bracing gable-ends framing.
- Reinforcing roof-to-wall connections.
- Upgrading exterior wall opening protections, such as with shutters.
- Upgrading exterior doors.
- Repairs to existing structures leading to any of the mitigation improvements.
