State Agency Mentoring

Governor Jeb Bush continues to promote his goal of recruiting 10 percent of each state agencies employees to become mentors. This goal is supported by the administrative rule passed by Florida Cabinet, which allows state employees up to five hours each month to mentor. Secretary John Agwunobi of the Department of Health is currently serving as the Governor’s Mentoring Initiative Chairman for state agencies this year. Each of these agencies or commissions is partnered with one or more public schools. State employees may choose to mentor at one of these schools or through other programs offered by our state partners. The state agencies that met or exceeded the Governor’s goal of 10 percent for they year 2003 include: the Florida Department of Lottery, Department of Juvenile Justice, Agency for Health Care Administration, Department of Revenue, and the Agency for Workforce Innovation.

About the Corporate Honor Roll

The Corporate Honor Roll is designed to recognize businesses supporting the Governor's Mentoring Initiative and Florida's education reform efforts. More than 60 businesses enrolled in the Corporate Honor Roll during the Governor's Mentoring Initiative's first year of operation and this list has grown in the last year to over the Governor's initial goal of 200 businesses. To be eligible, a company must have a CEO or top-level official in the business who serves as a mentor and the company must have a written policy that supports mentoring. Each company receives a certificate acknowledging their participation signed by Governor Jeb Bush. Most of these companies now offer their employees one hour off per week to serve as mentors.

The Governor's Mentoring Initiative also holds events to acknowledge businesses that join the Corporate Honor Roll in various cities throughout the state. This year, Corporate Honor Roll events were held in Pinellas, Brevard, Polk and Martin Counties. Each business owner is presented a Corporate Honor Roll Certificate from the Governor.
